The title Plexure refers to “the act or process of weaving together or interweaving; that which is woven together.” This idea lies at the heart of the work: two independent instrumental lines continually intersect, separate, imitate and transform one another, creating a tightly woven musical texture. Originally composed in 2005 for oboe—doubling English horn—and contrabassoon. The music demands considerable agility and precision from both performers, moving between rapid exchanges, sharply contrasting registers and passages in which the two instruments appear to merge into a single, complex voice. In this arrangement for flute and bass clarinet, the music acquires a new range of colors. The flute’s clarity and mobility are set against the bass clarinet’s darker, more resonant sonority, emphasizing both the contrast between the two lines and the moments in which they become inseparably intertwined.
