The Bewildered Planet is the second of four miniatures that make up Piano Fractals (op.46), composed in 2017 and dedicated to pianist Amit Dolberg. Its title is taken from a painting by Max Ernst, whose disquieting imagery resonates in the piece’s sense of unstable motion and shifting perspective.
The music unfolds through the repetition and transformation of small rhythmic and melodic units, creating a texture in which local gestures mirror larger structural processes. As in the other miniatures of the set, the pitch material is derived from a tone matrix, while durations are organized through proportional groupings inspired by self-similar relationships, allowing patterns to reappear in altered forms across different temporal scales.
